- One important aspect in preventive medicine is to find cases with minor manifestation of an upcoming disease. Early therapy will avoid severe consequences of the disease and improve quality of life. Evaluation of the retina and optic nerve head are an important cornerstone in preventive medicine. The vasculature, the neurons and axons of the retina and the optic nerve show early changes in some systemic diseases like arterial hypertension, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer. Retinal neurons and vessels serve as surrogate parameters for early detection, predicting the risk of fatal events, and monitoring the effect of therapy. Tele-Ophthalmology means imaging the retina and the optic nerve in remote locations combined with a telemedical assessment of these images by specialized ophthalmologists and computer aided image analysis-systems.
