≪Organizer Abstract≫
All forms of violence are widespread across the globe, including interpersonal and political violence. In a globalized world, where social media is as effective in conducting wars as the best of weapons, violence in any part of the world has ripple effects, globally. Violence has ramifications for psychological functioning that may persist across several generations and affect communities. The proposed symposium will discuss research on the contextual and individual aspects of violence. Discussion of cultural influences on violence will include differences and similarities in individualist and collectivist cultural perspectives. Effects of violence on individuals will be discussed along with factors that perpetuate violence among individuals. Science can contribute to identifying and understanding individual and contextual perpetrators of violence and effects of violence. Through the conversation, symposia presenters will identify conclusions to be drawn from current scientific inquiry and gaps in the scientific understanding of violence.
