This study examined relationship between interpersonal traits and friendship styles among Japanese undergraduates. Participants, 75 males and 44 females, completed a friendship style scale (Okada, 1993) and the Interpersonal Personality Item Pool-Interpersonal Circumplex (IPIP-IPC-J). The IPIP-IPC-J consists of 32 items, and assesses individual differences of circumplex model of interpersonal traits. Multiple regression analysis indicates that each interpersonal trait links to different friendship styles. In addition, the relationships are different for sex. Though warmth and dominance links to male students' crowd relationship, only the warmth links to that of female students'. Only female students with submissive trait tend to avoid a deep relationship. Taken together, the characteristics of the friendship styles among Japanese are discussed.
