The spread of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) in Japan has promoted clinical practice based on the scientist-practitioner model. However, it is necessary to custom design a CBT program in order to practice the effective therapy for the various problems a patient might have. My presentation will focus on research investigating the psychosocial problems of patients with depression, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses. I will demonstrate what kind of difficulties such patients face, and the way in which we optimize CBT programs for these patients will be discussed. Finally, we will examine the development of medical psychology in Japan, and the improvements that have been made in the quality of clinical practice based on the scientist-practitioner model.
