Perception of art is one of the most difficult objects for psychological research. To be in line with ecological validity we should use methods which allow to catch the holistic impact of works of art on personality. The phenomenological approach is most appropriate.
We applied a method of phenomenological unstructured interview to study the perception of visual art. Participants were 79 Kazakh students. It allowed to receive information which would remain hidden or would be distorted when using more standardized methods. Qualitative information about specifics of perception of work of visual art is received: the personal factors defining perception, criteria of formation of the attitude to work of art, formation of early significant experience of interaction with works of art and its subsequent influence, an emotional and intellectual engagement into work of art, the personal meanings and values which are shown during the perception.
