The purpose of this study was to develop the functions of active listening scale. The items to measure the functions of active listening were first selected and then categorized into six dimensions: information arrangement, common understanding, conversation encouragement, emotional stability, building relationship, and releasing frustration. Twenty graduate participants who study counseling psychology were asked to practice the basic active listening skills while role-playing as counselors and clients with other participants, and then evaluated the functions of active listening in those skills. We discussed differences of the functions between each basic active listening skill in the counseling session. Furthermore, we compared scores between role-players as counselors and clients. The results showed that the functions of active listening was different between the counselors and the clients.
