Motivational Interviewing (MI) has been used across primary healthcare and been shown to be effective in addressing several issues. Although the need for cultural adaptations for therapeutic interventions is often noted in research, there are few guidelines. The rationale for culturally adapting Motivational Interviewing for the Caribbean community will be presented. The current limited research regarding the use of Motivational Interviewing within the Caribbean Canadian community will be reviewed as well as feedback from Motivational Interviewing training conducted in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition possible lessons learned from training in Trinidad and Tobago will be reviewed for adapability in the Canadian context.
