Logical commitments in belief revision

[Speaker] Piazza, Mario:1

In this talk we discuss some misunderstandings about the nature of logic in the mainstream cognitive psychology which have produced a black-and-white view of logic, making it largely irrelevant to cognition. In particular, against the influential view advanced by Gilbert Harman, we argue that logic is relevant to the dynamic process of belief revision, although, by its nature, it doesn't have the final word. After sketching how logic (in a domain-sensitive way) has to do with the kinematics of the web of beliefs of an individual, we propose an evolutionary explanation for the existence of reasoning which integrates the one proposed by Mercier and Sperber.
