In the domain of developmental psychology, the SEM technic plays an important role especially in longitudinal analysis such as testing causal relations based on cross-lagged effect model and determining growth trajectory using latent growth curve model. The SEM technic offers a very flexible set of tools for testing various types of hypotheses held in developmental research including complex ones that cannot be handled by the traditional approach. However, there are some potential pitfalls of using SEM in various phases of the analysis such as model specification, data preparation, analysis, and interpretation. In this presentation, I review the advantages of SEM in developmental research by introducing some excellent application and consider potential pitfalls and precautions of using SEM by giving some actual cases.
