- The course commences with an overview of the landmarks in understanding the nature of astigmatism and methods employed in its correction. This provides a platform for a discussion of modern techniques to assist the recognition of the regular part of corneal astigmatism. Once the nature of the astigmatism is understood and quantified, the surgical indications and techniques used to correct astigmatism at the corneal plane will be described. A practical approach including a nomogram for the use of full thickness opposite clear corneal incisions will be presented, with a particular focus on how it is used to correct corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery. Correction of astigmatism at the lenticular plane will be discussed in relation to indications and designs for toric lens implants. The session will conclude with a discussion on how to improve the alignment of toric IOLs when correcting astigmatism at the lenticular plane.
