- Diabetic macular edema is one of the hot topics of discussion in the various national and international meetings as diabetic retinopathy is fast becoming prevalent in the entire world. Hence many clinical trials have been conducted in the past which has given a new dimension in the management of diabetic macular edema. Diabetic retinopathy is an enigma and there is a differential behaviour of various cases seen in clinical practice. Ophthalmologists come across discrepancy in the evidence based medicine (Clinical trials) and the practice based medicine (Clinical practice) which many a time poses a difficult situation for them. Newer investigative tools like wide field fluorescein angiography have added a new dimension in studying the peripheral retina which may be the potential area for development of progression of retinopathy. Steroids were in vogue in the treatment of diabetic macular edema earlier. However they were discarded, but are again finding their place in the management of diabetic macular edema, if used intravitreally in low doses. The symposium will address these issues and will deliberate on them to provide meaningful and conclusive treatment algorithm in cases of diabetic macular edema to the attendees.
