Manual Mushroom Keratoplasty

Yathish Shivanna Harsha Nagaraj Thungappa Kugar Rohit Shetty

To demonstrate the mushroom-shaped wound architecture for penetrating keratoplasty, done manually and thereby obviating the need of a femtosecond laser.

Summary of Content
Traditional manual penetrating keratoplasty involves vertical cuts, unlike the femtosecond laser enabled keratoplasty with which the wound architecture can be varied and deviated from the traditional vertical cuts. This wound architecture with the laser gives superior wound strength, with fewer wound-related complications. However, the cost of surgery escalates considerably on using the femtosecond laser. In this video, we demonstrate the mushroom -wound architecture done manually, thereby cutting the cost to the patient, as well as ensuring superior wound-strength, lesser sutures and quicker postoperative recovery.
