The Survey of Eye Disease in Himalayan Region

Objective/Purpose
We organized the medical program called 'Eye Camp' with Japanese volunteers to support the medical eye care at the remote areas in Nepal.
In Himalayan region, one of the most poverty areas, there are many blind patients because medical eye care is not developed sufficiently; moreover, little is known about the survey of eye disease in that region.
The aim of this study was to investigate a survey of the eye diseases in Himalayan region.

Materials/Patients
From the medical records of four Eye Camps organized at Himalayan regions in Nepal (Pachikal, Bhojpur, Tatopani and Manang area) between 2009 and 2013, the types and ratio of eye disease were investigated.

Methods
Each Eye Camp was organized for three days with medical examination, care and surgery.
The interview of medical history, visual acuity test, and support of patients were conducted by Nepalese and Japanese volunteers.
The ophthalmic examinations, i.e. handy slit-lamp examination, fundus examination and surgery were conducted by Nepalese and Japanese ophthalmologists.
Cataract surgery was performed for the patients who had low vision of < 6/20 (Snellen's chart) or high nuclear sclerosis of > Grade 3 (Emery-Little's classification).

Results and Conclusion
The total number of the patients visited Eye camps was 2,214 patients: 813 patients in Pachikal area, 485 patients in Bhojpur area, 461 patients in Tatopani area, and 455 patients in Manang area. Of the 2,214 patients, 975 were men (44%) and 1239 were women (56%). The average of age was 45.8 years old.
The patients had refractive error (23%), cataract (19%), dry eye (16%), conjunctivitis (13%), eye strain (6%), trauma (2%). The patients in Pachikal, Bhojpur, Tatopani, and Manang area had similar percentage of eye disease: cataract in 17%, 18%, 24%, and 18%; refractive error in 15%, 17%, 29%, and 37%; dry eye in 14%, 17%, 13%, and 22%, respectively.
The number of patients who could recover their visual acuity by glasses was 698 (32%). Cataract surgery was needed for 237 patients (11%).

In Himalayan region, about 50% of patients improves their visual acuity by wearing glasses or cataract surgery.
Organizing Eye Camp is beneficial for patients at remote region in Nepal, and further supports are needed.
