The smoking rate in schizophrenia is higher than that of general population. Nicotine may attenuate cognitive dysfunctions of schizophrenia. To examine this hypothesis, we examined nicotine effect on MK801, a noncompetitive antagonist of N-methyl-D-asparate receptors-induced locomotion in C57BL/6 or 129Sv mice. Nicotine enhanced MK801-induced hyper locomotion and the effect in C57Bl6 is higher than that in 129Sv. Quantitative trait locus mapping using C57Bl6 and 129Sv mice revealed significant QTLs on chromosome 18 and 19. These findings suggests that genetic factors might be involved in nicotinic-glutamatergic interactions that would affect symptoms of schizophrenia.
