One of the fundamental questions in understanding tissue development is how multipotent progenitors/tissue stem cells give rise to various cell types in a defined order to achieve appropriate tissue organization. Neural stem cells (NSCs) attract much attention since these cells give rise to neuronal and glial cell types in a developmental-stage dependent manner with a striking precision. In this study, we have shown that polycomb group (PcG) complex-mediated epigenetic mechanism plays a pivotal role in driving fate switching of NSCs during the mouse neocortical development. We would like to propose that PcG proteins serve as a developmental timer in NSCs.
