FDG uptake varies among different subtypes of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma

Background: Several studies have confirmed that FDG uptake varies among different subtypes of lymphoma. Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is HTLV-I associated peripheral T-cell lymphoma, which has been classified to different clinical subtypes. Purpose: Characterization of FDG uptake in adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma with clinical subtype. Materials and method: 243 patients were reviewed with newly diagnosed or relapsed lymphoma and performed FDG PET/CT at University of Miyazaki hospital between January 2006 and March 2013. The study group included 135 male and 108 female patients with a median age of 66 years (range 15-92 years). Seventy patients with ATL were classified to clinical subtypes (22 acute type, 25 lymphoma type, 10 chronic type, 13 smoldering type). Before the treatment, whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed using a PET/CT system. Regions of abnormal accumulation were identified and the standardized uptake value (SUV) was calculated as a relative measure of FDG uptake. The highest SUV (SUVmax) was used for analysis. Results: Highest mean and median values of SUVmax were observed in patients with DLBCL, FL, PTCL and ATL lymphoma type. The other, the lowest mean and median values were found in patients with MALT, MCL and ATL acute type. Statistically significant differences in SUVmax values (P =0.0005 ) were found between patients with ATL lymphoma type (mean 18.79) and acute type (mean 10.26). Conclusion: Biological behavior may be different ATL acute type from lymphoma type in glucose uptake.
