≪Organizer Abstract≫
Community involvement is critical to overcome social and environmental challenge. Disaster response must go beyond intervention with individuals to include the affected community in planning for current and future needs. Presentations will address community involvement in recovery from natural disasters such as hurricane, earthquake, and tsunami that include attention to development of social support systems for adults and for children. Speakers will also address cultural and diversity issues within communities that can significantly affect health and social wellness, such as minority cultures within large urban cities, and LGBT issues in rural communities that deny their presence. A final presentation will address essential community responses to human trafficking around the world.
