≪Organizer Abstract≫
In this symposium, presenters will discuss various considerations with regard to the mental health and well-being of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. Throughout the presentations, there will be an emphasis on affirming TGNC counseling and psychological practice. The first presentation describes the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Clientse, which were recently adopted by APA in 2015, and explores how to apply the guidelines in practice with TGNC people. The second presentation is a United States (U.S.)-based qualitative study examining emption work narratives of TGNC youth and family caregivers. The third presentation discusses how TGNC people of color around the world experience instersections of racism and anti-transgender bias.The fourth presentation is a quantitative study with a Canadian TGNC community-based sample examinineing how social marginalization influences TGNC mental health.The fifth presentation describes best practices in providing mental health training with TGNC people in the U.S.
