≪Organizer Abstract≫
We believe psychologists can contribute to the life of individuals. However, do psychologists really have an academic basis to fulfill needs from public, academic, and industrial societies? A committee aiming at establishing the field of "Psychology for public society" has been working on this issue in the Science Council of Japan for the past few years. The committee proposes a thematic session especially for psychologists working in Japan to discuss this issue with speakers leading their fields. The following problems need to be taken up: 1) how academic questions from the society should be answered, 2) what the society will require from psychologists, and 3) how psychology as an academic area should progress. In addition, topics on the social status of psychologists, for example, education and license to become a tenure-track psychologist in different places of the world will be introduced.
