This study compared opinions of supporting elderly parents between Japanese and Korean university students. A questionnaire was administered to 195 Japanese (male: 55, female: 140) and 303 Korean (male: 104, female: 199) university students. An analysis revealed that for all items asking for opinions of supporting elderly parents, the Korean university students' scores were higher than those of the Japanese university students. However, no significant difference in opinion of gender roles in households was observed between Japanese and Korean university students. Furthermore, there was no difference in living status with elders. These results suggest that although there is no difference between Japanese and Korean young adults in terms of their opinions of gender roles in households and of their living status with elders, a clear difference is observed in their opinions of supporting elders.
