Loving-kindness meditation (LKM) is a special Buddhist meditation that aims to cultivate pro-social attitudes, and its effectiveness on positive emotions and pro-social attitudes have been well demostrated by empirical studies. The practitioners of LKM bless their friends or oneselves at the beginning and then spread to strangers and even all beings, which is consistent with the order of benevolence of Confucianism. The empirical studies have demostrated that LKM cultivate pro-social attitudes through positive emotions, which is also consistent with the emotion-based ethics of Mencius. While the Confucian tradition discussed more about how to overcome the negative mental activities, LKM provides an important practice to cultivate benevolence from positive side. In turn, Confucianism, as secular philosophy, can also benefit the spread of LKM.
