The Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) has taken the lead in addressing transformation and redressing silences in (South) African Psychology related to the rights of the sexually and gender diverse. PsySSA in its quest to develop the discipline of Psychology nationally and internationally as a means of enhancing human well-being of all, including LGBTI, queer, and asexual persons, has since 2007 been a member of IPsyNET. This presentation will outline the benefits derived from such membership, including: Several documents highlighting the detrimental effects of LGBTI-related prejudice that were informed by PsySSA's participation in IPsyNET; the Arcus-funded PsySSA African LGBTI Human Rights Project that originated from involvement in IPsyNET and became the vehicle for establishing the PsySSA Sexuality and Gender Division; the development of a sexual and gender diversity position statement and practice guidelines; and the current development of a postgraduate course in African perspectives on sexuality and gender.
