Two studies attempted to construct the Japanese version of the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG-J) based on the original scale developed by Herek and McLemore (2010) and to investigate the reliability and validity of it. The ATLG-J consisted of six statements, three about gay men (ATG-J subscale) and three about lesbians (ATL-J subscale), to which respondents indicated their level of agreement or disagreement. In study 1 (n = 309), the results showed low internal consistency, but when the item-3 of each subscale was omitted, the reliability and validity became higher. In study 2 (n = 312), although we reconsidered the translation of the item-3 using the back-translation method and replicated the study 1, the results showed the same tendencies as those of the study 1. These results suggested the cultural differences in the attitudes toward homosexuals between Japan and the West.
