Harmony at the Workplace: An Organizational Index for Work in Retirement Age (Silver Work Index)

The Silver Work Index aims at identifying attributes of good organizational practice for employees about to enter retirement or working in retirement age.
We conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with experts from different scientific disciplines (e.g., demography, gerontology, HR-management, psychology), older workers, consultants, and human resources specialists and strategic and operative managers. Interviews were content analyzed. Categories and indicators were sharpened by an iterative process including the determination of inter-rater reliabilities.
Eight dimensions were derived: Organizational culture, leadership, work design, health management, individual development, knowledge management, transition to retirement, and employment in retirement. Furthermore, appreciation and individuality were reflected in most dimensions.
Results show that indicators gain importance through the special meaning they may have in retirement age. Further, dimensions, such as transition to retirement, are age-specific and distinguish the Silver Work Index from other indices. The results can contribute to improve practices for older employees in organizations.
