I am a clinical psychologist living in a city, one third of which was affected by the tsunami of 2011. Immediately after the disaster, I started conducing study seminars for school teachers within the disaster area. Teachers are an important source of psychosocial support for school children, but in this case, the teachers themselves were also victims and needed support. Between 2012 and 2014, I conducted questionnaire surveys of health/nursing teachers at public schools within the disaster areas, on the condition of school children under their care. I used this information in planning the content of my study seminars for public school teachers. In this presentation, I will talk about the results of my surveys of the mental and health condition of school children within the disaster areas, factors affecting children's resilience, and the forms of psychosocial support appropriate for children in disaster areas.
