Junior High School Gay Men's Relationships with Their Friends and Teachers in Japan

In Japanese schools, discrimination and prejudices against sexual minorities are still observed. Not surprisingly, many of them report the difficulties in their school lives, and this is particularly true for gay men. However, in some autobiographies and essays, gay men reported that their positive experience with their friends and teachers during their junior high school years. In this presentation, gay men's experience in their high school years will be introduced, highlighting the difference between the gay men's positive and negative relationship with their friends and teachers, which leads to better understanding of desirable interaction with friends and teachers and educational environment for gay men. From the findings, application for better educational settings and psychological services will also be discussed.
